Hayle Surf Life Saving Club Instructor, Matthew (Pezz) Perry has yet again had a successful outcome from his recent Beach Lifeguard Training Course run over the last couple of months for Club members. The 7 newly qualified Beach Lifeguards were Matt Gibbard, Thomas Gilbert, Dan Goodman, Wade Phillips, Treeve Oates, Raglan Thompson and Rachel Thomas most of whom are hoping to get jobs as Lifeguards over the summer on or local beaches with the RNLI.Course Instructor, Pezz Perry, said ?Well done to all the candidates, they have worked very hard over the last few weeks and braved very cold sea conditions to practice the rescue elements of the course. Thank you to the examiners Adam Garland (St Agnes SLSC) and Simon Crawfourd (Perranporth SLSC) for giving up their time on Saturday to put them all through the various elements of the qualification which, included First Aid and Resuscitation, Beach & Surf Awareness, Board and Torpedo rescues, Spinal Management, a timed beach run and pool swim etc." Posted 29 April 09. 11 club members were put through their paces on thursday 16 July 09 when they successfully completed their assessment for the SLSGB Life Saver Sport (Support) Part A Award. The candidates ranged from the ages of 14 to 50 from the Junior, Senior and Masters sections of the Club and were: -Trish Merrett, Ceri Harvey, Denise Cardew, Paul Hooper (Nipper parent) and Juniors - Andrea Harvey, Tom Onley, Charlotte Sawyer, Ben Jolly, Daire Peters, Nick Trestrail, & Emily Corin.Course Instructor, Carol Penberthy said ?This Award qualifies our members to assist with Safety cover and take part in the water elements of our Surf Life Saving Competitions and is a great stepping stone to the SLSGB Beach Lifeguard qualification. All the candidates performed very well in tricky sea conditions and proved to the Assessors, Pezz Perry and Steve Penberthy that they had mastered a Board rescue of an conscious patient, a Torpedo rescue of an unconscious patient that becomes conscious, complete a 400 metre sea swim within 15 minutes, knew their signal flags and had a good knowledge of the sea and beach environment. It was particularly rewarding to have seven Juniors completing the Award along side the older members of the club.? Thank you to Assessors Pezz Perry & Steve Penberthy and to those who helped with safety cover during the course and at the assessment - James Burlingham, Rachel Thomas, Mike Penberthy, Dave Morgan, Alan & Jordan Roberts, Laura Smith & Raglan Thompson. See photo in slideshow on home page. Dave Reskelly also successfully competed the award on 24 July.

Eight more members of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club recently gained a Life Saving qualification ? Will Clift, Jordan Harris, Dan Morse, Trish Merrett, Dan Moore & Laura Smith passed their SLSGB Beach Lifeguard assessment which will enable them to apply for Beach Life guard jobs on our local beaches next summer and James Harrison and Aaronn Wilson gained their Beach Lifeguard Support Award qualifying them to provide safety cover at our Club sessions. This was the last course for the year run by Club Instructor, Pezz Perry and was completed just before he jetted off to Australia to deservedly spend the winter months in a warmer climate. Club Captain, Dave Parker said ?As usual the standard of the candidates was very high due to the excellent teaching of Pezz Perry. Pezz has excelled himself this year by running 4 courses, two for non members and two for members of the Club, and achieving a very high pass rate with 31 people qualifying as Beach Lifeguards since March. The SLSGB Beach Lifeguard qualification can be obtained through our Club in one of two ways ? for members the course is run over a number of weeks and is currently free - we also run one week intensive courses for non-members at a cost of £120 to include the cost of the manual and exam fee. Both courses will be available next year dictated by demand and will be advertised on this website. The minimum age is 16 and you must be able to swim 400m in a swimming pool within 7 minutes 30 seconds. To register your interest please e-mail our Training Officer, Steve Penberthy at smpenberthy@googlemail.com.? Posted 7/11/09
